How long have you been playing?
I started playing bass when I was 15.
Do you play any other instruments besides bass guitar?
Yes, I started playing Tuba Baritone (Treble Clef) when I was 10 or maybe a little earlier. I started playing bagpipes around 30. People ask me why bagpipes and I say because it is the strangest instrument I've ever heard... and it's not over yet. I also play the flute. I have David Nalls bagpipes and a Yamaha flute.
Can you tell us about your bass rig?
My Bongo 5-string bass is a Cadillac. It is a challenge to play right because it takes finesse, but a real joy to play. I love this bass. I recently picked up an Ampeg SVT - 7 Pro 1,000 Watt head and run it through an Ampeg 4 x 10 cabinet.
What bands/artists are your biggest influences?
I did love and still love Jethro Tull, Grand Funk and Black Sabbath. Also, I would say Dream Theater, Steve Morse Band, Kansas , Dixie Dregs. There are so many but I think they are my main influences. Dave LaRue is my favorite Bass player. I love his style... so fast and yet so melodic.
What bands or artists did you love when you were a kid/teen?
Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Grand Funk, Black Sabbath, Billy Cobham, Strawbs and Larry Coryell.
What do you think of the current music scene?
Life goes on. My dad thought my music was no good. There is a lot of good stuff out there and I am open to all of it. The current music scene is great.
How would you describe Carpe Nota's sound?
I would describe Carpe Nota's sound as unique. We all bring our rock and our own energy. It's very intense as individuals but we collaborate to form this special(k) sound. We love music and may be a little obsessed with playing our stuff. I will stop here because I can go on forever.
What do you most enjoy about being a member of Carpe Nota?
I enjoy Dan and his screaming when he gets mad at not hitting a right note. Pete is the man. He plays that geetar so good and is always over there working and then there's toto, oh wait a minute I was thinking Pete the scarecrow and Dan the lion... I guess that makes me, never mind. pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. I love the people in Carpe Nota.
